Do you suffer from closets that are so full of stuff that you can't find anything?
Do you dread opening the doors?
Closets are great if they're organized with the right things and not just a space for getting items out of sight!
There's lots of different techniques for getting your closet organized and clutter free and don't cost you a lot of money. My favourite is simple: Empty and Edit!
1.Most organizing techniques start with pulling everything out and putting items into groups. Jeans with jeans, running shoes with other running shoes etc. This helps you to really see how much of each category of item you actually have.
2. The next is giving the closet a quick clean. Baseboards, floors, shelves, doors and if you're feeling inspired: go for touch up painting or peel and stick wallpaper the interior walls. This will make your closet look fresh and new, ready for the next step.
3. Now the work really begins. Deciding what to keep and what to let go. If you have items that don't belong in that closet, place them in a relocate bin to be dealt with at the end of the day. If you run around putting items in their 'homes' throughout the house, you'll get distracted and the closet will take more time then needed.
4. If you have a lot of shoes to organize, I recommend a tiered shoe rack. This unit uses less space and can store lots of footwear. Not having shoes scattered on the floor, piled on top of each other, not only saves the items from being damaged but also helps you find and rehome items quickly.
5. If this closet is the home of lots of small items (ex. broom closet), purchasing clear bins is a great plan. They don't have to be designer bins, Dollar Store or Thrift Store finds work just as well. I like clear bins because you can see what's inside quickly. Having lots of little items contained is key to any organized space.
